Local help for Chernobyl continues 20 years on!
Caterham
Oxted & Godstone Lions Club are this year again supporting the people of
Gomel, Belarus many of whom suffer from the after effects of the Chernobyl
nuclear explosion in 1986, some 60 miles from the City.
Over
20 bags of clothing and goods were taken to the warehouse on the Isle of
Sheppey where they were sorted, weighed and labelled in both English and
Russian prior to being loaded on the lorry on 6th September. The
goods arrived in Gomel
a few days ago as part of a consignment expected to weigh about 14 tons and
filling a very large lorry!COG Lions
also made a financial contribution to the transportation costs.
The
trust for Chernobyl children arranged for 12
children, siblings of some in the children’s hospice in Belarus, to come to the UK for a month in
August. A member of COG Lions hosted a 9 year old girl for part of this time
and other Lions from the District provided days out for the children at Chatham
Dockyard and at Chessington World of Adventure.
The
Club has also contributed towards sight equipment for school 27 in Gomel.
COG
Lions would like to thank all those who helped by providing clothes and goods
for those less fortunate than themselves.
