    Blood Donation

    Give the gift of life

For some people, the mere thought of a needle is enough to send shivers down the spine, but the National Blood Service explains why it’s vital for people to overcome their fears and help keep blood stocks healthy, especially at Christmas.

Giving blood may not be at the top of people’s agenda during the busy festive season, which is why the National Blood Service (NBS) is reminding Caterhamresidents to roll up their sleeves in the lead up to Christmas.

Blood stocks traditionally fall by 10 percent at this time of year as the cold weather affects attendance at blood donor sessions, people are busy planning festive activities, or regular blood donors are ill with colds or flu.

Miranda Lacaze, communications officer for the NBS, said it is vital for people to come forward and help boost blood stocks.

"For the sake of an hour of your time and a small scratch on your arm you can give the best Christmas present of all this year, the gift of life."

"During December the demand for blood is a little higher due to fewer people donating and perhaps more road accidents."

"This is why we are urging all eligible donors to spare a thought for those who are unfortunate enough to be spending Christmas in hospital this year, and to please help us keep blood stocks healthy.  Remember, it could be someone you know."

The demand for blood never stops, even at Christmas.  This is because two blood products taken from a donation have short shelf lives.  Platelets last for just five days and are often used to help treat leukaemia and cancer patients.  Red cells last a bit longer at 35 days and are transfused to patients suffering from severe anaemia or severe blood loss.  This is why stocks need to be constantly replenished to meet hospital demand.

Miss Lacaze added:  "A lot of people probably hear our appeals for blood donors around Christmas and think about giving blood, but thinking about it really isn’t enough."

"We need people to turn those good intentions into positive action and do their bit to save or improve another person’s life. Christmas is the perfect time to start."

"Blood donation is quick, easy and painless.  If it hurt, our regular donors wouldn’t keep coming back time and time again.  It’s one of those cases where the fear is much worse than the reality."

"One blood donation can save up to three lives and all it costs you is an hour out of your day, three times a year."

The National Blood Service needs to collect 8000 donations every day to supply lifesaving blood products to hospitals in England and north Wales, yet only 5 percent of the eligible population give blood.

Donors can give blood every 16 weeks, which is three times a year.  Donors are encouraged to make an appointment to reduce waiting times.
